He has played first chair trumpet with that orchestra since the beginning of the current season, when he began a year's leave of absence from the CSO.   He has returned to the CSO on several occasions this season to perform as trumpet principal and served in that capacity during the orchestra's European tour last month under music director  Riccardo Muti .

Jackson was given a Grammy Lifetime Award in 2012. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Trumpet player Wayne Jackson, who played standout horn lines on rock 'n' roll, soul, R&B and pop mainstays along with Memphis Horns partner and tenor saxophonist Andrew Love, has died. He was 74. His wife, Amy, said her husband died of congestive heart failure on June 21 at a hospital with her by his side. Jackson had been hospitalized and released June 7 before taking a turn for the worse Monday night and being readmitted.

Instead, they gave one of their most personal and moving performances. Marsalis had originally planned on visiting the great jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player Clark Terry for his upcoming 94 th birthday. But over the weekend, a health crisis landed the 93-year-old musician in the hospital. So Marsalis and his fellow performers decided to surprise Terry in the hospital and perform a few songs for the man who influenced them so much.
