Complete Arban Method

Introduction In the Introduction J. B. Arban covers the range of the cornet (trumpet). He also details alternate fingerings and describes the use of the tuning slide. Arban states his opinion that the mouthpiece should be two-thirds on the lower lip and one-third on the upper. (Herbert Lincoln Clarke recommends the mouthpiece to rest half upper lip and half lower lip.) Arban then stresses the proper "attack" technique. He uses the "tu" pronunciation, in contrast with modern authorities, which often use "tee." Arban concludes with proper breathing technique (see diaphragmatic breathing) I. First Studies Arban then begins his method with a focus on tone (Studies 1-10). The next studies (11-50) familiarize the student with fingerings, develop his or her range, and instill a habit of precision in attacking the notes. In the next section, which is devoted to syncopation, goes from a simple quarter-half-quarter rhythm to a sixteenth-eighth-sixteenth repeated rhy...

Musician Wynton Marsalis performs during a memorial service for actress Ruby Dee at The Riverside Church, Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 in New York. (AP Photo/Jason DeCrow) By Cox Media Group National Content Desk It was originally a scheduled day off for Wynton Marsalis and his bandmates. Instead, they gave one of their most personal and moving performances. Marsalis had originally planned on visiting the great jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player Clark Terry for his upcoming 94 th birthday. But over the weekend, a health crisis landed the 93-year-old musician in the hospital. So Marsalis and his fellow performers decided to surprise Terry in the hospital and perform a few songs for the man who influenced them so much. It was an emotionally moving event for everyone involved, as Marsalis so eloquently describes in a Facebook post.   http://m.journal-news.com/news/entertainment/music/wynton-marsalis-visits-hospital-play-legendary-tru/njP2m/

http://variety.com/2013/film/news/don-cheadle-on-learning-to-play-the-trumpet-its-a-mean-instrument-1200810576/ From Variety: Don Cheadle  says he began to play the trumpet three years ago as preparation for starring in and directing the Miles Davis biopic " Kill the Trumpet Player ." He found the trumpet to be unforgiving. "It's a mean instrument," he mused Thursday night at Harvelle's in Santa Monica. "It's a relief that my playing won't be used in the film."

Name a Bridge for a Trumpet Player

Image
From Koin.com Here's your chance to name a bridge PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- There's an effort to name Portland's newest bridge after one of the city's most beloved street performers. Kirk Reeves was better known to many as "The Trumpet Man." A  Facebook page has now been set up  in the hopes of having a new TriMet light rail bridge named in his honor. Reeves was a staple on the Hawthorne Bridge for years -- decked out in Mickey Mouse ears and playing the trumpet.  He died just about one year ago. The  Facebook page  already has more than 700 likes. It directs people on how to submit a bridge name suggestion in Reeves' honor.

Alison Balsom on Trumpet

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music/alison-balsom-strikes-blow-trumpet-3569021 From the article: Being known as 'the crumpet with the trumpet' doesn't seem to have done Alison Balsom's career any harm, even if it's not part of the official marketing strategy. But serious music-making is what she likes to talk about, and in particular her concert with pianist Tom Poster at the Bridgewater Hall on Sunday. Their programme includes Bach, Handel, Satie, Cole Porter… quite a lot of music not actually written for trumpet and piano, but arranged for them. "Some people would say," she concedes, "if it's not originally written for your instrument, don't play it. "But Bach himself arranged music by Vivaldi, and I think if there's a musical argument for it, then it makes sense. "And the trumpet as it is now didn't exist when some of the great masters were writing. "I want to show them that the trumpet has all sorts...

Bud Herseth - The Orchestral Trumpet Player

I feel like an old fuddy-duddy.  There was a time in Chicago when brass players rejoiced in the powerful, clean, balanced, precise playing of the CSO Masters. Even the Chicago Tribune understood and recognized their talent by putting them on the cover of the magazine section. I still have my article, in a trunk in the attic. We had Bud Herseth on trumpet, Dale Clevenger on french horn, Arnold Jacobs on tuba, and Jay Friedman on trombone.   Each was in a league of their own, and each could have had an illustrious solo career. It was however, unfair to every other orchestra in the world. It was like having the best players in a sport, all on the same team.  I really feel that in their heyday, they were unmatched. That in itself can be problematic, with egos and personalities.  The beauty of the CSO Brass was a complete support of the articulation, and musical style of the first chair and amongst all the first chair players.  Clean, clear, precision was sometimes c...
